Located in Mogao town of Dunhuang city, Gansu province,Dunhuang Railway Station was built in 2006. It serves as the terminal of Dunhuang Railway, a by-line of Lanzhou-Xinjiang Railway. 1133 kilometers from Lanzhou Railway Station, it is under the governance of Lanzhou Railway Bureau.
It is 7 kilometers from the station from urban Dunhuang. The station building stands in a depression land with national highways in the south and railway platforms in the north. Right to the south is Wenhua (Cultural) passage leading to Mogao Grottoes. According to the city space, the station building will be the scenic focal point of main stems connecting to the grottoes and will naturally become a vital controlling factor of later development of city space. The Station Square will be constructed by filling and links the national highways and platforms in the south by a flat gradient so that a smooth path will be formed and makes the station building more outstanding. The whole building is styled by symmetric configuration. Featuring grandeur and solemnity it forms the controlling point of environment landscape, creates a unique sense of place, and communicates with the city space. In accordance with the historical and cultural features of that Dunhuang and Mogao Grottoes started to become famous in Han and Wei Dynasties and t were then widely recognized in Sui and Tang Dynasties, the building is designed following charm of Han and Tang Dynasties. It is well-proportioned in 5 parts, creating a kind of rhythm and a combination of vertical gables and gentle and graceful slope eaves, taking on a lingering charm of Han’s rusticity and sturdiness and Tang's inclusiveness and openness.
